Barrier: The Collected Edition is a 208-page trade paperback from Image Comics that collects the complete five-issue Barrier miniseries by writer Brian K. Vaughan, artist Marcos Martín, and colorist Muntsa Vicente — the Eisner Award-winning team behind The Private Eye. It is a Harvey Award-winning sci-fi thriller about the U.S.-Mexico border, told in English and Spanish with no translation, and printed in its original landscape “widescreen” format.

What is Barrier about?

Barrier follows Liddy, a Texas rancher losing patience with the traffickers cutting across her land, and Óscar, a Honduran man crossing north through the desert. When the two collide at the border, neither understands a word the other is saying — and then something arrives that neither of them has language for at all. Forced together by an encounter far outside anything they were braced for, they have to build trust without a shared vocabulary.

The book is a genre-bending story that uses a science fiction premise to interrogate a very earthbound subject: how misunderstanding — linguistic, cultural, personal — turns into conflict, and what happens when the walls between two people stop being optional.

Why is Barrier printed sideways?

Because it was designed that way. Barrier debuted on Panel Syndicate, the DRM-free, pay-what-you-want digital platform Vaughan, Martín, and Vicente founded in 2013, and Martín laid the pages out for a horizontal computer monitor rather than a vertical comics page. This collection preserves that landscape composition instead of cropping or re-flowing it, so you read the book turned on its side — the way the art was drawn to be read.

Why is there no translation?

The Spanish dialogue is deliberately left untranslated, with no footnotes or asterisks. If you only read English, you spend large stretches of the book understanding Óscar exactly as well as Liddy does — which is to say, barely. The formal choice is the argument. Bilingual readers get a different book than monolingual readers do, and that is the point.

Yes. When Image published the five oversized single issues in May 2018, the creators stated there were no plans to reprint them in a collected volume — the issues were sold as a durable, self-contained art object. This 2026 trade paperback reverses that decision and is the first single-volume print collection of the complete story.

Brian K. Vaughan is the Eisner and Hugo Award-winning writer and co-creator of Saga, Paper Girls, Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, and Pride of Baghdad. He lives in Los Angeles.

Marcos Martín is a Catalan cartoonist whose Marvel and DC work includes Batgirl: Year One, Doctor Strange: The Oath, Amazing Spider-Man, and Daredevil. In 2013 he co-founded Panel Syndicate with Vaughan and colorist Muntsa Vicente to self-publish The Private Eye, which won an Eisner for Best Digital Comic and a Harvey Award for Best Online Comics Work.
