The issue that kicks off an acclaimed creative era — and introduces a new street-level threat.

The issue

An ecology group is making waves against the chemical company Kelco over its toxic spills, and Matt Murdock lends legal aid from his free clinic. To "clean up" the resistance to big business, a new mercenary villain called Bullet is brought in. The issue marks the start of John Romita Jr.'s celebrated run as regular penciller (he'd stay through #282), paired with writer Ann Nocenti.

Meet the creators

Ann Nocenti moved from editing at Marvel into writing in the 1980s, taking over Daredevil for a run widely remembered for tackling unconventional, socially conscious subject matter — corporate pollution, addiction, morality — rather than sticking to standard supervillain plots. She also wrote for Uncanny X-Men during this period and later moved into journalism and screenwriting.

Al Williamson came up through the legendary EC Comics stable of the 1950s before becoming one of the most admired inkers and pencillers in the industry, prized for his lush, classically trained linework. He's especially remembered for adapting Star Wars into comics and newspaper strips, bringing a cinematic sensibility that few artists of his generation could match.

What it's worth

A low-to-mid value copper-age issue. Raw VF/NM copies generally run $8–$20; CGC 9.8 copies typically trade $60–$130. The draws are the first Bullet and the launch of the Nocenti/Romita Jr. run.
