“Surprising, terrifying, and wholly original, make no mistake—this is the book of the year.”
Damon Lindelof (Lost, Watchmen, The Leftovers), quoted on the cover of Vol. 1
Vol. 1 collects issues 1 through 6, the complete first half of the series, and it is where every reader should start.
Why You Need to Read The Nice House on the Lake
1. The hook lands in a single issue. Issue 1 introduces eleven people, strands them, ends the world and unmasks the host before the last page. You know by the end of the first chapter whether this book is for you.
2. The horror comes from friendship. DC's own editorial describes the series as the structure of Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None rebuilt as science fiction. Walter saved these particular people because he loved them, and the dread comes from watching them work out what that love has cost everyone else. This is our read, and it is why the book works on people who say they don't like horror comics.
3. Every issue belongs to one character. Walter gives each guest a title: the Artist, the Writer, the Comedian, the Reporter. Each issue puts one of them in focus, and the row of icons across every cover highlights a different symbol each time. By the halfway point you know these people the way you know your own friend group.
4. The awards back it up. The series won the 2022 Eisner Award for Best New Series, Tynion won Best Writer the same year, Jordie Bellaire won the 2023 Eisner for Best Coloring, and the series took the 2024 Angoulême prize for a series. The Eisners are the best-known awards in American comics, and DC describes the Angoulême prize as one of the most prestigious in the field.
5. The ending is finally arriving. The last page of issue 12 reads “End of Cycle One.” The second cycle, The Nice House by the Sea, is scheduled to conclude on October 14, 2026, so new readers can go straight through without the long waits original readers sat through.
The Characters: Who Is in the House
Walter's friends come from three parts of his life: high school, college and New York. The ages and histories below come from DC's official guide to the series.
Walter
The host. Walter is one of a species that engineered the end of the world. He was given a human body and placed among humans as a teenager to evaluate them and identify the ones worth preserving. He was supposed to choose exemplary people. He chose the people he loved. Everything in the series follows from that decision.
Ryan Cane, The Artist
Age 26. Ryan met Walter five years ago in New York and is the youngest and newest member of the group, with the fewest ties to everyone else. Issue 1 opens with a flash-forward of an older, one-eyed Ryan remembering how Walter kept asking her how she thought the world would end. Late in the series she gets her hands on the house's controls, with terrible consequences.
Norah Jakobs, The Writer
Age 34. Norah met Walter nineteen years ago at Marquette University High School and, along with Reg, is one of his oldest friends. She is a trans woman and Veronica's high school ex. The second half of the series belongs to her: she becomes the one person Walter cannot fool, then his prisoner, then his confidante.
David Daye, The Comedian
Age 32. David met Walter eleven years ago at Sarah's 21st birthday party at Sarah Lawrence College. He wants to make everyone laugh, and issue 4 turns on what a comedian does when nobody is in the mood: tell the audience a truth they can't believe.
Molly Reynolds, The Accountant
Age 34. Molly met Walter eighteen years ago at Mayfair Mall with her best friend Veronica. Her husband was left outside when the world ended, and her grief drives one of the darkest chapters of the book.
Veronica Wright, The Scientist
Age 35. Veronica met Walter eighteen years ago through Norah, giving her one of the longest connections to him. She works with NASA, and in issue 5 what she sees in the stars above the house upends what she thought she knew.
Sam Nguyen, The Reporter
Age 34. Sam met Walter seventeen years ago through Reg and belongs to both the high school and New York groups. He is Arturo's partner and a journalist who cannot leave a question unanswered, which sends him out to walk the edge of the property in issue 3.
Arturo Pérez, The Acupuncturist
Age 36. Arturo met Walter ten years ago at Sam's 24th birthday in New York. He is practical, he is the guest least close to Walter, and all he wants is for Sam to be happy. Issue 9 is told from his side.
Sarah Radnitz, The Consultant
Age 32. Sarah met Walter twelve years ago at Sarah Lawrence. A flashback in issue 8 suggests she reads Walter better than almost anyone in the house.
Naya Radia, The Doctor
Age 34. Naya met Walter nine years ago in New York, after a date with Rick. She and Rick are married. What happens to her in the final act raises the stakes for everyone left.
Rick MacEwan, The Pianist
Age 34. Rick met Walter thirteen years ago at Sarah Lawrence and is Naya's husband.
Reginald “Reg” Madison, The Painter
Age 34. Reg met Walter nineteen years ago at Marquette and was his best friend in high school. He was not one of the ten people chosen. His arrival at the end of Vol. 1 is the twist that breaks the story open, because the house is built for exactly ten.
How the house works
- An invisible barrier keeps everyone inside the property, which includes the lake, the woods, a set of strange statues, a greenhouse and a windowless black structure at the far edge.
- Residents can ask for anything by writing it down, and it arrives.
- Nobody ages, injuries heal in moments, and nobody can die.
- A control panel can change the environment and the people in it.
- The house is meant to hold exactly ten residents.
The Nice House on the Lake: All 12 Issues Explained
Spoiler warning: everything below this line gives away the plot of the full series, including the ending. If you haven't read it, stop here and start with Vol. 1.
Issue 1 (June 1, 2021)
A flash-forward shows a one-eyed Ryan recalling the man who kept asking how she thought the world would end. In the present, Walter's friends from high school, college and New York arrive at his lake house, each assigned a title. Then a phone picks up the news: the world outside is burning, and the end plays out live on social media. Walter reveals what he is.

Issue 2 (July 6, 2021)
A flashback shows a younger, troubled Walter. At the house, his return throws the group into chaos and leaves Norah badly hurt. News of the apocalypse trickles in and then arrives all at once. The guests split: some sink into despair, some start working out how to live with it, and some want to walk out the door.
Issue 3 (August 3, 2021)
Sam's issue. While others try to organize the group and stay positive, Sam pulls away from Arturo and everyone else. Walter's rules said not to cross the property line, so Sam walks the perimeter of the lake to find out where it is. He finds unsettling architecture at the edges of the property, and something worse beyond it.
Issue 4 (September 7, 2021)
David's issue. The group learns how supplies work: write down what you want and it appears. The lists show who everyone is, from practical to outlandish. Molly's requests turn into a cry for help, and what happens when she gets what she asks for reveals a terrifying truth about the house.
Issue 5 (October 5, 2021)
Veronica's issue. Flashbacks show Walter quietly engineering his friend groups over the years, with new attention on someone named Reg. In the present, the group knows that wounds heal in moments and that none of them can die. For the first time they set out together, find a massive obelisk in the woods and fail to force it open. Veronica looks at the stars and sees something that upends what she thought she knew.

Issue 6 (November 16, 2021)
Reg's issue, and the end of Vol. 1. Flashbacks show Walter, Norah and Reg as high school friends who talked about the end of the world. Reg was never on the list, yet he is here: the house has an eleventh guest. Readers learn what Walter is and what he wants from humanity. Then Walter wipes everyone's memories and resets the house.

Issue 7 (March 1, 2022)
The second act begins with a factory reset. Nobody remembers the apocalypse. Reg is now part of the group, and Walter lives among them as just another guest, steering conversations away from the wrong questions. One person doesn't fit the new arrangement: Norah, who is shut away on her own while Walter tries to keep her comfortable in her cage.
Issue 8 (April 19, 2022)
Life in the house looks better with Walter playing human, but he has taken Norah's place to do it. She is the only one who still knows the truth, and she is the only one who can get under his skin. A flashback shows how well Sarah understands him. Meanwhile the others keep pushing toward a way out, and the final image shows how close one of them is to the truth.

Issue 9 (May 31, 2022)
Arturo's issue. Walter goes missing from the house, and the others no longer remember Norah exists. Something keeps scratching at the edge of Sam's memory, and messages from Norah begin to appear, written in steam. Arturo only wants Sam to be happy, and his acupuncture ends up playing a part. Norah, meanwhile, works her way into Walter's confidence and starts learning the house's secrets.

Issue 10 (September 27, 2022)
The residents know they can survive anything, so they start testing it with stunts that escalate to Russian roulette. Behind the curtain, Walter shows Norah the alien controls that run the house and admits what he was sent to do: preserve ten humans who each represent a different side of humanity. He is part of something much bigger, and he is scared. Norah is in position to take control. Then the healing is switched off at the wrong moment, and Naya dies.

Issue 11 (November 8, 2022)
Norah's issue. It was Ryan who reached the controls and turned off the immortality, and the death that follows brings everyone's memories back. The survivors prepare to move against Walter. Flashbacks trace how Norah went from one of his subjects to his prisoner to his second-in-command, and the two oldest friends in the story face each other with betrayal on both sides.
Issue 12 (December 27, 2022)
The survivors confront Walter. He walks them through why every other plan fails and then offers the one that works: they kill him and take the house for themselves. They do. The last pages show the truth. Norah had argued that the group could only live with their situation if they believed they had chosen it, so Walter's “death” was staged. He is still watching from outside, and he admits he hasn't told Norah everything. These were the early, easy days. End of Cycle One.
The Follow-Up: The Nice House by the Sea

The Nice House by the Sea is the second 12-issue cycle, by the same creative team. It launched on July 24, 2024, and it shows what Walter was supposed to do.
Max is another of Walter's species, and she followed the rules. She picked ten strangers who are the best in their fields, told them the truth about what was coming, and offered them a place in a house on the Mediterranean. They said yes. They also had the control panel from day one, so they can reshape the house and their own bodies.
The Lake House is a group of friends who were lied to. The Sea House is a group of rivals who volunteered. The series is about what happens when the two collide.
