2014: The Flash Streaks Onto The CW

On October 7, 2014, The Flash premiered on The CW with Grant Gustin as Barry Allen, a Central City forensic scientist struck by lightning after a particle-accelerator explosion. Spun out of Arrow, the DC Comics adaptation drew about 4.83 million viewers and a 1.9 rating in adults 18-49, making it The CW's most-watched and highest-rated series premiere since The Vampire Diaries in 2009, according to Wikipedia's season guide. The cast also featured Candice Patton, Danielle Panabaker, Carlos Valdes, Tom Cavanagh and Jesse L. Martin. A full-season pickup followed within two weeks, and the show ran for nine seasons and became a cornerstone of the Arrowverse.

2026: Marvel's Midnight Launches Hit Shelves

Today is new-comic day for Marvel's "Midnight" event line: Midnight X-Men #1 (Jonathan Hickman, Matteo Della Fonte), Midnight Spider-Man #1 (Phillip Kennedy Johnson, ScieTronc) and Midnight Fantastic Four #1 (Benjamin Percy, Kev Walker). Each is $5.99 with multiple variant covers. The X-Men entry pits vampires and mutant empyres against each other in New York's shadows; Spider-Man's hook is an Oscorp-engineered spider hybrid.

1950: Howard Chaykin Is Born

Howard Victor Chaykin was born October 7, 1950, in Newark, New Jersey. His American Flagg! (First Comics, 1983-89) is widely called his defining work; he also gave us Black Kiss, DC's The Shadow (1986), Batman: Thrillkiller and the American Century series. Chaykin entered the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame in 2022.
