Updated October 2, 2026.
"The light had its turn." That's the tagline Marvel chose for its darkest publishing bet in years. On October 7, 2026, Midnight X-Men #1, Midnight Fantastic Four #1 and Midnight Spider-Man #1 arrive on the same day as the only new Marvel comics on shelves. Retailers have ordered more than one million copies across the three issues, and second printings are already scheduled for October 28. The surest way to get every issue is to add the Midnight Universe titles to your pull list on Manage Comics.

What Is the Midnight Universe?
Marvel's Midnight Universe is a brand-new horror imprint set outside Earth-616 continuity, launching with three interconnected #1s:
- Midnight X-Men #1 — Jonathan Hickman & Matteo Della Fonte turn the X-Men's fight for acceptance into a war for survival against a vampire faction called the mutant empyres.
- Midnight Fantastic Four #1 — Benjamin Percy & Kev Walker send Reed Richards chasing secrets that warp the First Family into something monstrous.
- Midnight Spider-Man #1 — Phillip Kennedy Johnson & ScieTronc reinvent Peter Parker's origin as a body-horror nightmare, courtesy of a ruthless Oscorp.
One Million Copies Ordered Before Launch
On September 23, Marvel announced that Midnight Spider-Man #1, Midnight Fantastic Four #1 and Midnight X-Men #1 had together passed one million copies ordered, two weeks before release, as reported by AIPT. That figure covers all three launch issues combined.
Marvel sent all three back to press before they reached shelves. Each Midnight Universe second printing goes on sale October 28 with its cover fully revealed: Steve Beach on Midnight Spider-Man #1, Kev Walker on Midnight Fantastic Four #1 and Dike Ruan on Midnight X-Men #1.
Expect more news the same week the books arrive. Marvel has a panel called "Marvel Comics: The Midnight Hour" on the New York Comic Con schedule for Friday, October 9.
The Buzz
Marvel isn't being quiet about this one. Here's what's already being said:
"We wanted to match their ambition with this unique launch plan." — Dan Buckley, Marvel Executive Editor
"I'm so enthusiastic about this project — it's the most excited I've been in years." — Jonathan Hickman, writer, Midnight X-Men
"His storytelling is so good, and he is absolutely nailing every aspect." — Jordan D. White, editor, on artist Matteo Della Fonte (via Comic Watch)
"A cosmic-horror tragedy." — Murphy's Multiverse, on Midnight Fantastic Four's Reed Richards-centered debut
"I want to see a Spider-Man conceived by H.R. Giger." — Phillip Kennedy Johnson, writer, Midnight Spider-Man (via Marvel.com)
Why This Launch Is Different
Marvel almost never clears the release calendar for one imprint. On October 7, Midnight X-Men #1, Midnight Fantastic Four #1 and Midnight Spider-Man #1 will be the only new Marvel comics on shelves. AIPT called it a rare, unified event for the publisher. The first-print main covers ship in Marvel's new cloaked cover trade dress: the artwork stays hidden until you open the book. The October 28 second printings show the same covers uncloaked.
These Are Ongoing Series, Not a One-Week Event
Marvel is positioning Midnight as a long-term, interconnected line. In his X-Men Monday interview with AIPT, Jonathan Hickman said Midnight X-Men will be the only X-book in the Midnight Universe, which lets him use the whole cast inside one title, and that he can already map out the first six arcs. For readers, that means the story keeps going well past the #1s, and each issue builds on the one before it.
How to Subscribe on Manage Comics
Every comic has a Final Order Cutoff (FOC), the last day a shop can order copies before release, and it falls weeks before the book ships. The FOC for the three #1s was August 31, 2026. A subscription takes that deadline off your plate:
- Open Comic Subscriptions on our site and sign in to Manage Comics.
- Add Midnight X-Men, Midnight Fantastic Four and Midnight Spider-Man to your pull list.
- We set your copy of each new issue aside automatically, so you never have to watch an FOC date again.
