Hellboy was created by Mike Mignola and first appeared in San Diego Comic-Con Comics #2 in 1993, before getting his own series with Hellboy: Seed of Destruction in 1994. Mignola, who had already made a name for himself working with Marvel and DC, saw this new series as his chance to dive deeper into the world of folklore, mythology, and the occult. From an early sketch of a character called "Hell Boy," Mignola crafted a red-skinned, cigar-smoking demon with a massive stone hand, whose moral compass constantly led him to fight for good, even though he wasn’t your typical hero.

Hellboy’s origin is a fascinating mix of supernatural and historical elements. During World War II, the infamous occultist Grigori Rasputin summoned Hellboy to Earth, intending to use him as a tool to bring about the Apocalypse. But the plan backfired.
