Update: Clayface Wins the Weekend With $24.5M
Update: Last week we reported $3.5 million in Thursday previews and a $20 to $25 million weekend forecast. The result: Clayface won the weekend with $24.5 million, the low end of the forecast and still number one. Worldwide it opened to $43 million, which roughly covers its reported budget. Audiences gave it an A- CinemaScore, the grade moviegoers hand out as they leave the theater.
The competition: Nathan Fielder's You Can See Everything (A24) took $19.5 million in weekend two, up 25% from the weekend before (about a quarter more money) as it added theaters, for $45 million domestic. Bleeding Cool expects it to take the top spot this coming weekend. Street Fighter fell 72% to $8.6 million, meaning it earned about 72% less than the weekend before.
A number one opening and a solid audience grade is what gets people looking at the Clayface books. Clayface: Celebrity Dirt is the series to watch.

James Gunn: The DCU Is About Telling "That Story"
On Threads Sunday, James Gunn agreed with a fan who said the DCU is built around telling stories first. He said that approach lets DC offer different styles and points of view, including stories that put villains up front like The Penguin and Clayface. His words: "I dislike the idea that individual stories aren't meaningful unless they lead to something else."
He pointed to Star Wars as the model, a universe that has told stories across decades and media without each one setting up the next. He named Superman and Man of Tomorrow as part of "The Superman Saga," but said those links don't mean other stories only exist to set up later events. He hopes people watch Clayface as a fun horror movie in its own right. Bleeding Cool's Ray Flook sets it against the MCU, where he says following along can take homework, and cites Lanterns as a series that worked on its own.
Smart messaging the week Clayface opens. A movie that doesn't come with a reading list is an easier sell to the casual crowd, and the casual crowd fills the seats.

Update: New Avengers: Doomsday TV Spot
Update: Last week it was the World Series preview. Now Marvel has released a new 31-second TV spot, reported by Bleeding Cool Saturday night. It mixes footage from the CinemaCon debut with new material, including Scott Lang and a debate among three Captain Americas, and shows three teams standing together. Bleeding Cool says those teams are only assumed to be the Avengers, X-Men and Fantastic Four.
Anthony and Joe Russo direct. Kevin Feige, Louis D'Esposito and Jonathan Schwartz produce. The cast includes Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth and Pedro Pascal. The film opens exclusively in theaters December 18, a little under eight weeks out. Every new look sends people back to the Avengers books and the older team-up issues.

Daredevil: Born Again Season 3: Who's Back, Who's Out
Carrie-Anne Moss told Entertainment Weekly (via Bleeding Cool, Friday) that Jeri Hogarth will not return for Daredevil: Born Again season three. Finn Jones is confirmed to return as Danny Rand, Iron Fist, revealed at New York Comic-Con. Elodie Yung's return as Elektra is a report: Bleeding Cool points to on-set photos of her with Charlie Cox. Season three is the show's final season.
Moss played Jeri, the lawyer who hires Jessica Jones, in Jessica Jones, and bridged Daredevil season two and The Defenders. She also said she and Krysten Ritter are developing a film called Claire: "Krysten Ritter and I are like besties."
Iron Fist and Elektra are the names to watch, and the Frank Miller Daredevil run is the shelf that moves when this show is in the news.

The Sales Chart: Midnight Still Leads
How to read it: these numbers are an index, not a count of copies. The top seller that week is set to 100, and every other book is scored against it: that book's sales divided by the top seller's sales, times 100. If the number two book shows 93.67, it sold about 93.7% as many copies as number one, so the two were nearly tied. The data is store sales, not publisher orders, from 600+ comic shops through Prana Direct Market Solutions (Manage Comics and Comic Shop Assistant systems), for October 13 to 19.
1. Midnight Spider-Man #1 (Marvel) 100. 2. Midnight X-Men #1 (Marvel) 93.67. 3. Amazing Spider-Man #1001 (Marvel) 89.15, about 89% of the top seller. 4. Venom #1 (Marvel) 84.91. 5. Doom All-On-One #1 (Marvel) 73.24, about 73% of the top seller. Midnight Fantastic Four #1 is at number nine, and DC lands Teen Titans #2, Doom Patrol #2 and Legion of Super-Heroes #2 in the top ten.
Marvel's Midnight launch is still setting the pace.
